Fish Rescue

Itaipu continuously monitors, through its Contingency Plan, the possible impacts of the operation of the project on the ichthyofauna throughout the lake and the Piracema Channel, in order to avoid and mitigate them.

The occurrence of spawning and recruitment of fish in the reservoir and in the area of influence is subject to interference by lowering the reservoir level in times of piracema, which may result in the entrapment and death of fish in small isolated ponds. For this reason, the reproduction of the ichthyofauna has been monitored continuously for 18 years. During 2017 the level of the reservoir remained practically constant, and there was no need to mobilize for redemptions of this nature.

There is also monitoring of professional fishing, carried out for the last 33 years and allows understanding the succession and changes in the fish livinghood after the formation of the reservoir.

The fish that get trapped in the generating units are rescued when the turbines stop for maintenance. In 2017, 441 fish from 51 species were removed from the generating units and released back to their original environment.

The rescue actions during the machines maintenance and in marginal lagoons formed by the flexibilization of the of the reservoir are recorded in detail, and in view of their relevance within the context of the business, which led to the creation of a specific action in the organizational structure of the Superintendence of Environmental Management.
