Operational and Economic Development

Itaipu is a world leader in the production of clean and renewable energy, having produced more than 2.5 billion MWh since the beginning of its operation in 1984.

One of Itaipu's operational challenges in 2017 was to maintain excellence in the integrated management of water and energy for the generation of electricity. The management model, adopted since 2012, requires an integrated and articulated work between the teams of hydrology, operation and maintenance - dance with the waters.

With 20 generating units and an installed capacity of 14,000 MW, it is responsible for supplying 15% of the energy consumed in Brazil and 86% in Paraguay.

Another challenge and strategic perspective of the company's technical staff is the technological upgrade of the plant, with an investment of 500 million dollars over 10 years of work, considering two generating units per year. This action will be a benchmark in risk management control and production of digital and modern technologies that will replace the analog technology of the 1970s.

The company also has a great mission to prepare itself for the year 2023, when Annex C, which covers the commercial conditions of the power th plant, will be revised in the 50 anniversary of the signing of its Treaty. The diplomatic agencies of both countries shall be responsible for safeguarding Itaipu and the Treaty that governs it, be it in its nature and legal conduct, or in its operation, including the importance that sustainability has in its activities and, therefore, honor the commitments undertaken by Brazil and Paraguay in energy integration and in the common administration of the largest power plant in the world.
