Sustainable Territorial Development

Itaipu has a solid history of commitment to the sustainable development of the region in which it is located, which currently covers 29 municipalities in the Paraná River Basin 3 (28 in Paraná and Mundo Novo, Mato Grosso do Sul) and 25 other municipalities in the West of Paraná, with about 1.3 million inhabitants.

The Company develops programs focused on environmental conservation, improvements in infrastructure, public health, income generation, education, protection and respect for human rights, which contribute to the constant improvement of quality of life in the region. This commitment is part of its Binational Sustainability Policy, approved in 2014, and it has been included in the Company's Strategic Plan since 2003. Get to know some of Itaipu's actions on page 68 (tables with programs).

In addition to these initiatives, the Company distributes royalties to the governments of Brazil and Paraguay and prioritizes the hiring of local suppliers in bidding processes, especially micro and small companies.

As a fully installed venture, Itaipu does not cause significant new impacts. The risks and vulnerability of internal control systems are evaluated and monitored, and are included in the Corporate Risk Map of the Integrated Risk Management System.

In 2017, one of the Company's main engaging actions was the organization of six micro- regional seminars to identify and share information on the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS) for the population of 54 municipalities in the region.

The events took place in the municipalities of Marechal Cândido Rondon, Assis Chateaubriand, Foz do Iguaçu, Medianeira, Cascavel and Toledo, gathering around 350 people.

The purpose of these meetings is to engage the municipal government, civil society and the private sector in the construction of a Joint Action Agenda for the implementation of Agenda 2030. In addition, since August, joint meetings have been held based on the gathering of information and needs made with local leaderships.

Following the works, a platform of indicators will be developed so that partner cities can effectively contribute to the goals of the SDOs. The work is the result of an agreement between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Itaipu.
