Greenhouse Effect Gases Emissions and Climate Changes

Itaipu Binational is a world leader in the production of clean and renewable energy and does not emit significant quantities of greenhouse gases (GHG) in its operational processes.

To reinforce its commitment to mitigate actions that contribute to global climate change in 2016, Itaipu renewed its Commitment Statement with Eletrobras for the 2016-2020 horizon.

In this Statement the plan of absolute and relative targets to be met annually was presented, for the three scopes of the GHG Protocol Brazil. They refer to the reduction of electricity consumption, fuels of fossil origin in the entity's vehicles, and distances traveled by employees and visitors on flights contracted in airlines. The GHG emissions inventory is available in the following table and the breakdown of targets and performance in 2017 was discussed in the Corporate Governance chapter (pages 14-17).

Itaipu acts in a responsible manner in accordance with the Binational Sustainability Policy, with the premises of the Internal Energy Conservation Committee and in line with Eletrobras' guidelines in the search for reduction of energy consumption and fossil fuels and in the adoption of clean renewable energy solutions.

The data presented in the table below shows the results of the actions developed by the Company in 2017:

  • Significant reduction in diesel consumption and in parallel an increase in the consumption of alcohol and gasoline in the vehicles and equipment of the Itaipu fleet. The Company has prioritized the use of alcohol in cars and reduced the need for diesel oil in generators.
  • Increase of more than 100% in the use of biomethane to supply the fleet.
